Born in 1881 in Italy, Guccio Gucci spent his young adulthood in several locations including Paris and London. It is beleived that he developed a taste for beauty and elegance as a young man while working as a lift attendant in London's opulent Savoy Hotel at the turn of the 19th century. In 1921, Guccio Gucci opened a small leather, luggage and saddelry company, in Florence, Italy where fine leather goods were created by the most talented Florentine craftsmen. His original clients were predominantly horseman who would come to him for saddle, travel and tack accessories. Hence the strong saddlery influence including the well known snaffle-bit and english stirrup icons found accessorizing so many Gucci works of fashion still today. Eventually the Florence store began to attract a a chicer more international clientele and a new store was opened in 1938 on Via Condotti in Rome. Gucci's global presence began to build in 1953 with the opening of their New York store. In the 1960's celebrities such as Jackie Onassis, Peter Sellers and Audrey Hepburn made the Gucci name synonomous with hollywood chic.
